My Antonia

Willa Cather in her novel My Antonia offers her view of life during the pioneer time by telling about Jim Burton and all the residents of the place he lives and their experiences.
My Antonia would be really different if the story was told from Antonia point of view. It would be all about her feelings and how she felt and what it was like for her growing up. Jim's telling the story and talking about his life through that time period and Antonia would have different experiences and stories to tell.
Cather got really realistic with Jim's character. I did not even know she was a women. It seems like she knows how a young man would act and feel. It is unique how a women could write in a man's point of view and know how to do it. She got Jim's character down packed he always seemed like he was a boy in the novel never thought about this question before.
Hmmmm.! Why would he change the title from Antonia to My Antonia? I have a very good reason that makes really good since in to how I think he would change the title. For one he's always had a crush on Antonia and thought she was different from the rest of the girls that lived there. He also grew up with her and taught her how to speak English and had to help her through a tragedy when her father died. So he's really close to her. So that's why I guess he changed the name to My Antonia

The Effects of Setting

Author Willa Cather embedded literary devices, such as metaphors, similes, and personification, within her writing.

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

"The grave, with its tall red grass that was never mowed, was like a little island."

"Winter comes down savagely over a little town on the prairie. The wind that sweeps in from the open country strips away all the leafy screens that hide one yard from another in summer, and the houses seem to draw closer together. The roofs, that looked so far away across the green treetops, now stare you in the face, and they are so much uglier than when their angles were softened by vines and shrubs.

The setting of this book greatly impacts the characters. Nebraska weather is very cold and makes living conditions hard on everyone for instance, during Christmas the families couldn't make it to town. So instead they had to make their own gifts with the things they had. Plus they have wagons n when the roads gets covered its hard to navigate where they are going.

Well, our house has is packed full of stuff like a pack rat. I don't like things that ain't organized it makes me aggravated. We have so much stuff including my uncle's dad's belongings everything is just shoved places.

Argument: Dating Ages

Assertion Claim
  • In relationships age should have little effect.
Reason 1.
  • Maturity level is the most important when trying to date someone older or younger than you.
    • Commentary 1: "An older partner could take advantage of you because they know you're naive, and you haven't been through as much as them, So they're gonna trick you, make you fall in love," which happens if you truly are naive.
    • Commentary 2: People should be careful and not go for somebody just because they assume the person will be more mature.
Reason 2.
  • Personality is another reason that age shouldn't matter. It all depends on if you like the person for who they truly are.
    • Commentary 1: Personality is more important than age. If your sure of yourself and your outgoing and funny your more likely to find someone with that same personality no matter the age.
    • Commentary 2: It goes two ways also if there are things you cant stand about yourself, your more likely to look for someone that's the complete opposite from your personality dislikes.
Opposing Claims/They say
  • Many believe that kids under 18 shouldn't be dating someone over 18 because their brains aren't fully developed yet and not as mature.
My Rebuttal/I say
  • Nevertheless, I say that age has nothing to do with maturity. I believe it has to do with experience, what they have been through, how they act and what they like. Some grown adults act just like younger kids under 18.
My Paragraph
In relationships age should have little effect. There's two reasons why I think this way. Maturity and some one's personality is the number one key in a relationship not their age. For instance an "older partner could take an advantage of you because they know you're naive, and you have not been through as much as them, so they're going to trick you, make you fall in love then hurt you," that's only if your really naive. People should be careful and not go for someone that they seem is more mature so don't assume that if they are older they are more mature.Personality is another reason that age should not matter. It all depends on if you like the person for who they truly are. Personality wise if you're sure of yourself and your outgoing and funny your more likely to find someone with that same personality no matter the age. It goes two ways if there are things you cannot stand about yourself, your more than likely to look for someone that's the complete opposite from your own personality dislikes. However, like grown adults and parents do not like the idea of younger kids dating way older than them. They believe that kids younger than 18 their brains aren't fully developed yet and more immature. Nevertheless, I say that age has nothing to do with maturity, I believe it has to do with experience, what they have been through, how they act, and what they like. There's a few young adults out there that act just like us younger KIDS! So far always the positives out way the negative facts. I think people need to be more sagacious about things around them.

My Thinking:
  • This paragraph is based mainly deductive thinking because of the information, facts, and quotes presented in the paragraph above.

Book Review: The Off Season

The characters of this book The Off Season are interesting to learn about. There is DJ the second to youngest child and the main character of this story. She's the only girl of a family of three boys that all play football. DJ is pretty muscular for a girl which I can see, because she plays football. Then there is Brian her so called Boyfriend that's embarrassed of her. He too plays football, but not for Redbend he plays for Hawley. Brian and DJ are rivals! Brian is a popular jock who everyone likes. Now it goes on for me too talk about DJ's three brothers: Win, Bill, and Curtis. Win is the oldest of the three and one of the best college football players on his team. Bill also plays college ball, but on a different team then Win. Wins more dedicated and on a better team. Win's hardworking and doesn't give up and Bill is the big Teddy Bear. Last but not least there is Curtis the youngest out of DJ, Win, and Bill. He also plays football, but he really isn't into it like his older siblings. He's one of those smart geeky boys that's more interested in his school work and projects then a sport. Yes, the author makes me visualize  them as real people, because there is people out there in the real world just like the people in this book. I like the characters in this book they are all full of different personalities. If your reading a book and you didn't like the characters you would not be interested in figuring out what would happen to them in the end. If you so happen to really like the characters you would not be able to put the book down and you would finish it to figure out what would happen to them all. DJ's personality is outgoing and don't care what people think. How she told Brian off, because he's embarrassed by her. Brian is defensive yet caring. How he doesn't want to be seen with her in public, but goes to her house helps out on the farm and takes her to buy stuff. Curtis is quiet like when he got in trouble for skipping school and staying over at his girlfriend's. The reason was that they had to stay up all night to work on their science fair project. He didn't tell because he didn't want his siblings to make fun of him for being smart.
The theme of this book I believe is a good one. The lesson the author wanted us to learn was A TOUGH LIFE CAN MAKE YOU STRONGER. For instance, it got Win and Bill all the way to college football, because they worked so hard at it. It got Win fighting for survival mentally and physically. Curtis fighting for everyone to see he is smart, but not to make fun of him. Brian did learn how to work hard, but in DJ's eyes he never learned other toughness. Like how to stand up to your so called friends and defend those who really are your friends even if they are unpopular or poor or the wrong size. All the things DJ had to go through this year were worth it, because she realized having an easy life and everything give to you don't make you strong and don't teach you anything.
Making a connection  towards this book The Off Season reminds me of the book Comeback by John Coy. DJ and Miles Manning are very much alike they aren't handsome or the prettiest kid at their school, but they have one thing in common they love football. They aren't the most popular or liked at their school however, they are determined to do their best for their team mates and team. Another connection that this book reminds me is when Win had to go to the hospital for his injury in football. DJ walked in there and her heart stopped she didn't know the situation was that bad. She saw tubes coming out of his throat and he couldn't set up or eat for himself, the nurses even had to roll him for him so he wouldn't get bed sores. It reminds me when my Grandma Grey had to go to the hospital when she was dieing. I went to see her and it was so scary all you could see was skin and bones her skin just hung off of her it broke my heart. I walked up to her and held her hand and told her I loved her and had to leave, because it hurt me to see her like that. She did noteven wake up when i grabbed her hand. :(

Henry VS. Forest Gump

In intense situations, a person's instinctual reaction causes him/her to react for self- preservation, whether that means taking flight or taking a stand. My inference about running happens to be your either scared to death or your standing up for yourself which makes you not look like a coward.
Henry's running is different from Forest's running. Henry ran because he was scared of the battles he had to face. He felt horrible. Forest Gump left, because he was made to and for Jenny the one he loved. I say it's two different meanings why they ran.
Henry and Forest close to the end of the book and movie it turned out good. Henry found pride and was in a better state of mind he was dedicated and kept firing his gun. Forest was thrilled he made his way back to Jenny at the end, but Jenny died. He was sad at the beginning about leaving Jenny however, she convinced him it was for the best. I think no matter how bad the situation is it ends up good.
Henry and Forest are the same but different. It started out bad and scary and got good at the end, but they dealt with it in different ways.

War Is.....

War is ridiculous, killing our men.
War is protecting, serving our country.
War is needed, protecting our rights.
War is crucial, shedding blood and tears.
War is outstanding, protecting our country.
War is sad, murdering our loved ones.
War is madness, destroying their minds.
War is disgusting, shredding our bodies.
War is scary, fighting in the darkness.
War is confusing, changing at the last minute.

Wounded Warrior Project

This Project, the wounded warriors, lets the victims from the war know they have a place to go and to do anything they want and need with people that have had the same predicament.

This Project has numerous programs that helps the mind, body, economic empowerment, and engagement. I think it makes them a better inner person with their mental problems; also keeps their mind off things and a place to go hide.

The Wounded Warrior Project has a Combat Stress Recovery Room, which helps them with their traumas that they have went through. From my opinion and from what i have inferred it gets them use to the life they use to have not the horrid memories from battle.

The Wounded Warriors has a program for the body which is The Physical Health and Wellness Program. I figured out it keeps your body healthy after injury while adjusting to being out of the madness of war. To me this program could keep you from going into depression and also helps with your body strength instead of doing nothing for your injury.

I could tell that This Project, the Wounded Warriors Project had plenty of thought to it. The programs were helpful with many of their Problems which got them on track. This project I believe has a tremendous effect on all the soldiers. Lets them know people care about them and they aren't they only ones out there

Book Review: Dark Flame

Alyson Noel's book Dark Flame got me hooked with it's dark magic and adventures.
The theme of the book is interesting. Ever tries to get the cure back from Romen so her and Damen can actually be together. The life lesson this book shows is to never give up keep going no matter how bad it gets. Ever and Damen not getting to touch each other is very hard on Ever. She trys to get in the doors to all the answers to help her and Damen, but she's loosing herself. Damen it really does not effect him at all. As long as he gets to be around her and see her everyday that's all he cares about. Ever misses his touch. Roman loves that they can't touch each other because Ever will always go him trying to get it. He can just play games with her.
Yes, the writer makes them seem real. The way the writer describes what they do and how they do it seems so realistic. I love the characters in this series of books. They are all connected in a way and know each other from way back in time.If i didn't like the characters I wouldn't care or want to read about the book. Since, I like the characters i always wonder what or how they're going to act next. Damen he's very outgoing and caring. He's always tried to help Ever like when she starts turning evil, he wants he to come ask him for help. When Ever does bad things behind his back like using dark magic he always forgives her. Another time is when she went to summerland without him and took Jude. Damen caught them there, but he still forgave her. Ever doesn't think much of herself and is always in bad situations. Ever is always putting herself down thinking she doesn't deserve the way Damen treats her. She deserves worse she always thinks. She has this curse on her where she can't resister her enemy. One day on Miles birthday she left Damen's side just to get close to him waiting on his touch. He just keeps walking!!! When Ever was thinking bad all the time about herself she actually started looking horrible. Her clothes were too baggy, she got zits, and her hair wasn't silky.
In some ways I can compare this book to others. The part I can compare is that it has magic in it like lot of other books i have read. Making spells, have special powers, very pretty, and strong is like the book Once a Witch. Dark Flame also has young love in it. Once a Witch has a very old family friend in it that she likes and he likes her too sooo it's similar. No, this book is fully on magic nothing really wasn't happening now. No, there really wasn't anything that personal that connected except one. When she got in a fight over trying to keep her friend safe and she didn't like it. Another connection i can make is when Ever tries to get her friend back and she does the right thing and says sorry to her. That's exactly what i had to do.
I recommend Dark Flameto readers that like magic, mystery, and to people who like reading about immortals. I give this book an eight.

remembering 9 11

911 has had little impact on my life yes, i think it's horrible, but it did nothappen to me. People that died in the building, their families would have had a bigger effect on them then on me. The reason i think that is because if one of my family members died in 911 i would be devastated and changed forever. Well, since no one i knew died at that disaster it did noteffect me, where i was in the little town of cave city. Plus another fact was that i was six years old and little kids like that don't really understand that well whats going on. 911 is a very unsettling and sad disaster for the US I'm glad i was no where near around .
